To become an LMSW, you must first obtain a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program. These programs generally take two years to complete, but if you have already taken approved courses and logged sufficient field hours while obtaining your BSW degree, you may be eligible for an Advanced Standing degree, such as that offered by UTRGV’s online MSW. You can complete these degree programs in as little as one year. After completing your master’s degree in social work, you progress through a series of pre-examinations, the TSBSWE licensure application, degree verification, forms on social work job history and security information, criminal record check, and eventually the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) master’s exam. When you pass the exam and receive board approval, you become an LMSW.
The exams provided by the Association of Social Work Boards are used in every U.S. state, as well as the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.
Each examination contains 170 four-option, multiple-choice questions designed to measure minimum competencies at four categories of practice. Only 150 of the 170 items are scored; the remaining 20 questions are pretest items included to measure their effectiveness as items on future examinations. These pretest items are scattered randomly throughout the examination. Candidates have four hours to complete the test, which is administered electronically.
